Midterms and old friends

Wow, I need to get better with updating this blog. The gaps are too big.

Let’s see, last week was midterm week and I had to proctor 5 exams. On Friday I had the “privilege” of proctoring the English Conversation mid-term. I was shocked to see the answers that my students had chosen. It was so hard for me not to tell them the correct one. So at the end of the exam I told them which answers were correct.

I asked my Co-teacher Mr. G for the results of the first graders (freshman in High School) English conversation midterm, and I got them and Oh boy, it’s pretty sad. The scores range from 0-90. It is obvious that they really do take this class as a joke. I could barely believe my eyes when I saw the score sheet.

So at the start of class today around 11 AM I asked them what they thought of the midterm. Many of them said that it was rather difficult. So Mr. Go agreed to go over the answers with them. This particular class 104, loves to talk. So while Mr. Go was writing the answers to the midterm on the board, this table in the back was talking. I let Mr. Go finish going over the test and asked that table to come to the front. With a lot of reluctance they did, I had them each say out loud “I am sorry Mr. GO, I will not talk while you are speaking again”

My class following 104, was 301, they are a pretty smart class. We were covering interviewing today. I passed out a work sheet and all they had to do was fill in the blank and practice interviewing one another. I collected the papers and was shocked to see so many blank answers. I need to figure out the best way to get through to my students!

In other news, I went to visit my college friend Dunn and his family this weekend. They live about a 3 hours bus ride from me. It was so nice to see a familiar face and reminisce about the old days. It is crazy how time flies. His daughter Ellie, is 2 1/2 years old. She is just the cutest thing ever. She has quite the appetite for a little girl. She devoured 3 Krispy Kreme (yes they have those out here) Doughnuts in about an hour! She called me “Emo” which is Aunt in Korean!

We went to a butterfly festival where there was traditional Korean dancing, singing, and food. They had an exhibit that had several old Korean items such as the old method of transportation when someone pulled people around in a carriage without horses (not too sure what this is called), and grinders for spices. They also had an exhibit on how to make rice cakes. At the end you were able to try and make a rice cake yourself but moving the piece of wood with all the sticky dough made that rather tough! They also had a butterfly house with a whole bunch of butterflies and various flowers. It was a really cool festival!

It was definitely nice to see another part of the country.
I will post more later on today when I get home. I have to go teach now!
